Action for Children has been providing a home from home for homeless children since 1869 when it was established as the National Children’s Home by a young Methodist minister named Thomas Stephenson. In the first instance he converted a disused stable block into a home today.
Action for Children does considerably more than simply provide a roof over homeless children’s heads, hence the change of name in September 2008.
The original vision of Stephenson was to provide a stable and secure home for children with a disciplined but loving environment, quite different from the hated workhouses so abundant at the time. Stephenson recognised specialist training was essential for childcare which, in itself, was revolutionary. Overtime there has been a shift to community based projects with childcare centres and support for vulnerable families.
“Action for Children is committed to helping the most vulnerable children and young people in the UK break through injustice, deprivation and inequality, so they can achieve their full potential. “
With 450 projects the charity helps nearly 170,000 children, young people and their families across the UK with campaigns and lobbying for change to social injustice. Action for Children is the leading provider of family and community centres with services for the disabled and their families, rural centres and help for young people leaving care.
This provision is across England Wales Scotland and Northern Ireland with support for work in Southern Africa, the Caribbean and Central America.
The change of name in September 2008 did not in any way change the legacy of Stephenson’s vision but this is a very different society and Action for Children has come a long way from the days when it simply supplied a home for children.
Support for families now include those with disabled children and guiding young people to be useful and productive members of society is an action of which Stephenson would have heartily approved.
